First Place at the Movie Box Office Goes to "17 Again"
April 10-12, 2009 Weekend Box Office Analysis and Box Office Summary Report.Three new movies entered theaters this weekend, "17 Again", "State of Play" and "Crank: High Voltage". Only one of these new releases was in competition to knock last weeks movie box office champ "Hannah Montana the Movie " from the top spot. Predictions indicated that the movie "17 Again"released by Warner Brother's. and helmed by Zac Effron of the High School Musical movies, would take the top spot, with the rest of the top five box office spot in close competition with each other. "Sate of Play" the latest political thriller movie, was expected to perform about average for it's genre at the movie box office. "Crank: High Voltage" the follow up to Crank, was expected to perform well, about the same as the first one, possibly a little higher, although predictions for this one were varied.
"17 Again" took the top gross at the movie box office to place number one at movie theaters everywhere, as movie goers bought $23.7 million worth of tickets to see the movie starring Zac Effron. It's $23.7 million weekend box office gross ranks seventh for all time opening weekend grosses among What If Comedies at the movie box office. "17 Again" marks Effron's third success at the movie box office and shows his ever growing popularity and reputation as a major movie box office draw. This weekend at the movie box office also saw a 15% bump from the same time, the year before, keeping the pace as one of the busiest April's on box office records. "17 Again" performed well and should be considered a success in regards to body switch movies. It very slightly out grossed the weekend box office gross of 13 Going on 30, which was the last commercially released movie in the same genre, although their openings are about the same in attendance. "13 going on 30" was released in 2004 and had a $21.1 weekend box office gross. This is movie was released by Warner Brothers. and should prove to be very profitable for them since "17 again" only had an estimated budget of a modest $20 million. It's $23.7 haul over the three day weekend at the movie box office came from about 4,200 screens at 3,255 theaters. 4,200 screens at 3,118 theaters. Advertisements showed that the studio stuck to what they know works. The advertising campaign was similar to the likes of "Freaky Friday", and "Big", both of witch were body switch were "Body Switch Comedies", but advertisements also brought to remembrance the "What If Comedy" "Click", which performed exceptionally at the movie box office.
Newly released political thriller, "Sate of Play", featuring an all-star cast including "Ben Affleck", Russell Crowe, Helen Mirien, Helen Mirren, Jeff Daniels, and Rachel McAdams took second place at the movie box office, earning about $14.1 at 3,200 screens at about 2,803 theaters. This gross is about what Industry insiders and analysts expected, with most predictions ranging from $13-16 million. It's opening gross is also about average for a political thriller, with a star studded cast. Adjusted for inflation, it performed about the same as "Runaway Jurry" did when it was released six years ago, and almost well as the "The Sentinel", when it opened in 2007. "Sate of Play" was advertised simply as a political thriller, not mentioning the face that it is based on a television series. The trailer(s) relied mainly on it's star studded cast, it showed the murder of a women, and a reporter (Crowe) uncovering a conspiracy behind it, despite everyone trying to make him go away. It will be interesting to see how it will hold up next week when a four new movies will be released at the weekend box office, three of which have similar targeted audiences.
"Hannah Montana" last weekend's number one at the movie box office, fell steeply to about $13.4 million from 3,118 theaters, an almost -60% drop from it's box office opening last weekend. It's domestic box office total has reached $56.9 million in ten days. This is the second movie from Disney featuring the Hannah Montana character, with the first being "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour". The latest picture (Hannah Montana the Movie) from Disney was shown on about 4,200 screens at 3,118 theaters, vs. the "Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" which was shown as a special engagement shown at 683 3D locations. Despite it's sharp second weekend drop, it still held up better than the previous Hannah Montana concert movie, when it dropped -66.9% in it's second weekend at the movie box office, although that was to be expected considering it was advertised as a "One Week Only" engagement, then extended following it's box office success. Disney is known for it's production of family fare themed movies, so it's no surprise from the success they've seen from releases of it's Hannah Montana television character to the big screen. They did this before, with "The Lizzie McGuire Movie", which was also directly based Disney's television show "Lizze McGuire", although it was not nearly as successful as the latest "Montana" movie, "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" ended it's movie box office run with about $42 million.
Placing fourth this weekend at the movie box office was Paramount / Dreamworks released Monster's Vs. Aliens. In it's fourth weekend box office run, it slid -39.3% percent to garner $13.2 million at 3,662 theaters. It's drop is about average for a picture of it's genre, and nature. So far it's domestic box office total has reached $163 million, this was achieved in 25 days. It is now this year's highest grossing picture. It ranks seventh on Dreamworks highest animated feature, but It should end up taking the 5th or 6th spot on Dreamworks Animations list when it's done with it's run and final movie box office numbers are released. Before it's release to the box office, "Monster's vs. Aliens" was heavily advertised in theaters and on TV, including the hyped 3D spot that was played during the Super Bowl. It is a great breakthrough for movies with 3D format, as theaters are preparing for James Cameron's , Sci-Fi Adventure Avatar, which will be shown in the 3D format almost exclusively.
Following it's record setting April weekend box office gross two weeks ago, "Fast and Furious", slowed down to about $11.7 million, a -56.8% drop from it's weekend gross the weekend before. Universal is reporting it's worldwide box office gross, putting "Fast and Furious" over the $225 million mark, overtaking the international total of the first and second "Furious" movie.Although it's third weekend box office drop is better than, the weekend before when it fell -60%, it did not hold up as well as the original two, with the first and second movies declining -38%, and -40% respectfully. Two weekends ago, latest installment in the "Fast and the Furious" series far surpassed all the openings of it's previous predecessors, the first opened to $40 million, the second at $50 million, and the third to $24 million. The major draw of this latest installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise was the return of the entire original cast, and story, with almost all of the advertisements using the tagline "New Model", "Original Parts" which refers to the return of actors Paul Walker, Van Disel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster.
The sequel to the non-stop action movie, "Crank", "Crank: High Voltage" failed to live up to it's predecessor's success, earning a energy lacking $7 million from 2,223 theaters, to rank sixth at the box office. "Crank: High Voltage" performed below industry expectations, since it was thought to at least gross the same as the first "Crank", which opened at $10.5 million almost 3 years ago. The success of the first picture relied mainly on the premise that it was something people hadn't seen before, with almost outrageous type action. The second one didn't seem to be able to point out anything new, instead looking like a direct continuation of the first Crank. The above could be a reason of it's less than expected performance.
Last weekend's movie box office diisapointment "Observe and Report", starring Seth Rogen, dissapointed even more this weekend than before. It took the seventh place at the movie box office, earning a mere $4.7 million, sinking a horrible -63%. One of the reasons could be that the movie is more of a dark comedy, which is not the type of comedy that Seth Rogen is typically cast. The movie is centers around a mall cop (Rogen), who starts to take things - life maybe? - (You'd have to see to understand). The only problem with this is that just two months ago Paul Blart: Mall Cop, a movie with a "somewhat" similar premise was released, it was a box office sensation, and much more commercial (audience friendly). Additionally "Observe and Reported" is rate R, while Paul Blart: Mall Cop, was rated PG-13. It now significantly trails "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" (of which Rogen starred), which had about the same opening box office weekend last year. Despite under performing , "Observe and Report" won't be a complete failure, when you take into account it's modest $18 million budget. It's box office total stands at $18.8 million. Man" will soon pass the similar "Forgetting Sarah Marshall' in total movie box office gross. As a note Paul Rudd had a role in a fore mentioned movie. It looks as though this comedy will continue it's strong run at the movie box office.
Knowing saw normal decline at the movie box office this weekend, losing -44.4%, despite dropping from about 502 theaters. It's weekend gross at the movie box office was $3.6 million at 2,405 theaters for a total domestic gross of $73.8 million. It placed eighth at the box office, falling three spots on the top ten chart from the weekend before. The movie which was released by Summit Entertainment (the studio behind the hugely successful Twilight movie released last year), and stars Nicholas Cage. The advertisements for this showed Nicholas Cage as a widowed father whose son unearths a number code in a time capsule dating past and future disasters. It is also a great improvement from Cage's last movie Bangkok Dangerous which opened to less than third of Knowing's opening weekend movie gross.
Ranking ninth this weekend at the movie box office is I Love You Man starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel with about $3.3 million , at 2,202 venues. It saw it's steepest decline, losing about -47% from the weekend before. Although it did achieve the feat passing the similar "Forgetting Sarah Marshall' in total box office gross. As a note Paul Rudd had a role in a fore mentioned movie. We'll have to see whether or not his comedy will get back on track and continue it's strong run at the movie box office. The Haunting in Connecticut lost -47.2% from the weekend before for $3.1 million at 2,255 sites, earning it the tenth spot at the box office this weekend. It's a domestic box office total stands at $51.8 million. The supernatural horror movie now ranks sixteen, at the movie box office for films in the same gene. The movie was released by Lionsgate Films, and it is poised to earn a spot for the top ten grossing Lionsgate films. The movie stars Virginia Madsen, and bares a PG-13 rating.
