X-men Wolverine Slices Through the Box Office Competition for a $85 Million Weekend Box Office Opening

X-men Wolverine Poster

X-Men Origins: Wolverine ( X-Men Wolverine ) cut it's way to the top of the North American box office taking in an astounding $85,058,003 million in it's opening weekend. It handily out grossed the opening of the first X-men Movie, but it wasn't enough to top the weekend opening of the second X-men (X2), grossing just a few hundred thousand dollars less.

Still, X-men Wolverine has successfully started the Summer Movie Season, and the Blockbuster Box Office Grosses.

It's $85,058,003 million haul came from 8,300 screens at 4,099 locations for a exceptional $20,751 per theater average Although ,X-men Origins Wolverine is a spin off / prequel of the X-men trilogy, it was advertised as a continuation of the X-men series, with the star power of Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine, it's box office gross showed the strategy it worked.

The movie was heavily advertised everywhere, including a special box office set of the X-Men Trilogy for the first time on Blu Ray, to coincide with the release of the Wolverine movie.

X-men Origins Wolverine also overcame the obstacle of the complete movie being leaked online, though there is the possibility that it actually helped the movie, adding to the hype of the movie's release. The leaked version of the movie was missing a large portion of the key special effects and scene editing. The movie was based on arguably the most popular X-men movie character (Wolverine), and the original X-men movies seemed to focus on him.

It's opening weekend gross was less than that of Iron Man, which was the number one movie at the box office when it opened during the same time frame last year. Still the box office saw a jump of 2.6% in from the year before when Iron Man had a opening weekend gross of $98.6.

With X-Men Origins Wolverine box gross, it should place towards the top of all time box grosses for Comic Book Movies, although it will most likely have a steep second weekend drop, when Star Trek is released next weekend.
